Silverstone LMS Qualifying Print E-mail

Saturday morning saw sunshine pushing through the clouds, but with a rain soaked circuit, the third and final practice was going to be a tricky affair.

As early as lap two, the Peugeot of Pedro Lamy brought out a red flag as he went off damaging the rear of his car.

A good sized crowd was already on hand with a number of Corvette fans clearly visible.

The Luc Alphand Aventures Corvette headed the time sheets for much of the session, but in the dying minutes, with a dry line finally coming through the greasy circuit, the Aston of Team Modena and then the IPB Spartak Racing Lamborghini improved on the Corvette's time.

The 72 C6-R fought back hard, but another red flag brought the session to a premature end without a restart. Game over.

On to qualifying and with only a short 20 minute window, the track was surprisingly almost empty for almost half the session. Only the Strakka Racing Aston with Darren Turner was pounding round. The three main contenders finally took to the track, but Guillaume Moreau pitted without a flying lap and lost further time while the car was worked on in the pits. It rejoined the circuit with under 5 minutes to go.

The Lamborghini with Peter Kox at the wheel was by now putting in some quick times and headed the field with a 1.45.327. The first flying lap for Thomas Enge was not enough, a 1.45.899, while the C6-R also fell short with a 1.45.987 on it's first flying lap, to place it third.

Both the 59 Aston and Corvette suffered with traffic for the remaining two laps, leaving Peter Kox "Surprised but delighted!" to gain the first pole position for the IPB Spartak Racing Lamborghini.

Thomas Enge confirmed they will push as hard a possible for the Aston win, while the Corvette only has to finish to claim the GT1 crown, so everything points to a cautious race for the Luc Alphand Aventures team.

The question now is, can the Corvette stay out of trouble and can the Lamborghini upset the apple cart by taking their maiden win? Just six hours on track or 1000klm lye between us and the answer.
