Scrap gold in the cellar
Last year I bought a flat from an elderly couple who had decided to move into a house in the countryside. On the day I was given the keys, they told me there was a box full of old books in the cellar. They did not necessarily feel like taking it with them so they asked me if I wanted to keep the books. I enjoy reading, so I decided to accept the gift. A couple of days later, when I was tidying the cellar, I opened the box. There were some books inside, but I also found another box there. It was not very big but quite heavy. Inside there was some scrap gold: broken necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets, chains and brooches. I could hardly believe my eyes. I actually had to pinch my arm to see if I was not dreaming. At first I thought that perhaps I should call the couple and tell them what I had just found, but I thought it over and decided not to. Perhaps they had done that on purpose. Maybe they had known about the gold. And if they hadn"t, they would realise their mistake one day and call me. I decided to keep the scrap gold and wait for a couple of months, maybe even a year or two. Then I would sell it. I don"t know if it was a good decision. The gold is still hidden in my flat, and I don"t think I have the guts to do anything with it.
